The Yamaha Reface CS is one of the best sounding synths to be released in the last few years.
Yamaha nailed two of the most important features of a synth specifically the sound and the interface. The range of sounds you can produce on this synth is incredibly wide, which was surprising to me because it doesn’t have the deep programming options of a synth like the ultranova or blofeld. The sonic range comes from the 5 varied oscillator types combined with the array of faders which seemed to produce usable/musical sounds throughout the entire travel of the faders. The faders are relatively small but it’s easy to forget about that because even very small movements can radically alter the sound. With other synths you don’t get that same type of constant feedback while programming. It may not have multiple LFOs or a mod matrix but it does offer instant access to all parameters from the front panel and when you combine that with the quality of sound this synth engine produces it ends up being a very satisfying synth. There is something to be said for a synth that you can learn inside and out in a very short period of time. Other synths may have more features but if a parameter is buried deep in some sub-menu it’s easy to lose your motivation along the way. Playing the CS is a different experience because you get more inspired by playing it and experimenting and before you know it several hours have gone by. If this synth had onboard memory it would be a best seller in my opinion. When connected to an iPad or iPhone running the Reface Capture app you can load and save patches as fast as any synth with built in memory. Overall the build quality of the Reface CS is very good. The keys, although mini, have a decent feel to them and the whole unit is small enough to be left under a computer monitor or on top of a larger synth in a live setup. I created a set of 75 patches which i used to create the video above. The patches can be downloaded here https://sellfy.com/p/1dFY
