The Korg Microkorg was introduced 14 years and approx. 450k units ago and it just keeps on going as the company announces the upcoming Microkorg-S (speaker) model to be released later this fall. Earlier this year I put together a set of patches while working on an animated series. The presets can be downloaded here: https://sellfy.com/p/4JIS
A lot of people aren’t fans of the minikeys but since I’m not a keyboardist I never really use synths that way to begin with so it doesn’t bother me. I use it as a synth module that happens to have keys built in. It doesn’t compare to the speed of the MS2000 interface but I think Korg left enough controls for sound editing and arp control to make the synth’s engine accessible on it’s own. The micron (sounds great) seemed to go the opposite route with full size keys and less front panel space for sound editing. The overall small size of the unit combined with the wide range of sounds is part of the reason why I still own it and bulkier synths have come and gone. How much studio space are you going to set aside for a 4 voice VA? The Roland boutique modules take it a step further as far as the sonic worth/physical volume ratio is concerned.
I like it for mid-range sounds, brass , some basses and clean digital percussives and arps. I like that it can go from doing aged dusty detuned sounds to clean organ stuff to 80’s synth sounds pretty easily. The DWGS osc waves from the days of the DW-6000/8000 are a more useful set than the novation digital waves for my purposes but every synth has it’s strengths and weaknesses and the novation ultranova is an under-utilized beast in it’s own right. I do film/animation projects and for me the MS2000/Microkorg sounds can hold up pretty well through the compression that video files go through for internet broadcast. Some synths sound great in your room but fall apart by the time they reach youtube/vimeo. The arp has proven very useful and a lot of times I’ll layer an arp bass and something like an M-tron pro vibes sound being sequenced by the Microkorg arp notes externally.
The 4 voice poly means it won’t be the right synth for every purpose but it does a good job at so many things that the huge sales figures are justified in my opinion. Every synth has a sweet spot and while the Microkorg/MS2000 has a wide range you do need to spend some time dialing it in if you want it to sound fuller. The Yamaha Reface CS is something special in that regard, it has a sweet spot that’s a mile wide.
Korg has been on a roll over the last few years ( Minilogue, Volca FM, Arp Odyssey, MS-20, Kingkorg). It’d be tough to guess what they were planning next but if they were taking requests I’d ask for a modern DW-8000 or even DSS-1.
